Merriam-Webster defines Wisdom as “knowledge that is gained by having many experiences in life; the natural ability to understand things that most other people cannot understand; the knowledge of what is proper or reasonable: good sense or judgement.” So, being truly wise comes from a life long commitment to learn.
When Mr. Greenleaf challenged servant-leaders to help others grow wiser, he knew it was no simple task. There is no course to take, no certification to earn. So what can we do? A few things come to mind:
Challenge others to reach outside their comfort zone
Offer them opportunities to explore new areas of interest
Encourage sound risk taking
Pull lessons from EVERY experience (both successes and failures)
If wisdom develops over time, we need to also build in resilience, perseverance and a healthy dose of stamina!
